报告人简介:蔡成志教授在华南理工大学化学系获得学士(1986)和硕士(1989)学位;1996年在瑞士苏黎世联邦理工学院获得有机化学博士学位;19961999年在瑞士苏黎世联邦理工学院量子电子研究所从事博士后研究。2000年至今历任美国休斯顿大学化学系助理教授、副教授和教授(终生)。曾获得美国国家科学基金会职业奖和苏黎世联邦理工学院奖章等奖项。主持和参与了多项美国国家科学基金会(NSF)和美国国家健康研究院(NIH)研究项目。在Nature Mater, Adv. Mater, J. Am. Chem. Soc, Biomaterials等刊物上发表论文70多篇,授权美国专利5项。主要研究兴趣是金属催化有机合成、有机薄膜、表面生物功能化、介孔硅生物医学材料和生物偶联点击化学等。
 
报告简介:
 
Device-associated infections, such as catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI), are due to formation of pathogenic biofilms on the devices. In these biofilms, pathogens are embedded in their secreted extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) that shield them from antimicrobial agents and host defense and facilitate development of drug resistance. Despite extensive research, long-term prevention of pathogenic colonization and biofilm formation in a high nutrient environment remains a great challenge. I will present our new strategy to combat CAUTI, based on bacterial interference using non-pathogenic bacteria to form biofilms as a live base to fight against the pathogens. We demonstrated that the non-pathogenic biofilms prevented colonization by five uropathogenic isolates in artificial urine for up to three weeks. This result represents the state-of-the-art in preventing pathogenic colonization.  In this project, we also aim to gain new fundamental understanding of biofilms using a combination of surface functionalization, carbohydrate synthesis, click chemistry for bioconjugation, model systems for CAUTI, and bioanalytical methods. Our results indicate the correlation of carbohydrate-bacterial fimbriae binding affinity to the biofilm coverage and stability
